Washington Nationals Win 5-2, Continue Home Streak with 12, Still #1

Photo from tonight’s game.

The Washington Nationals confidently jumped ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays tonight in the first inning, giving pitcher Livan Hernandez a hand with a two run lead. The Nats increased their lead to four in the third inning and went on to win the game, 5-2.

Baseball fans head for their cars after leaving Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, located in the east corner of diamond shaped Washington, D.C.

RFK Stadium was one of only a handful of stadiums in Major League Baseball tonight that hosted a team from far away. In this weekend of interleague play the New York Mets visited Yankee Stadium. Oakland hosted their neighbors from across the San Francisco Bay. The Chicago White Sox played the Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles saw the Angels and Dodgers battle. Toronto was originally scheduled to visit Montreal, until the Expos made their exodus from Canada last winter to become Washington’s summer “home team,” the Washington Nationals.

Gay Chamber of Commerce to Ring NYSE Closing Bell at 4:00 p.m. Today

Today National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) Board member Walter Schubert will represent the NGLCC by ringing the closing bell of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Schubert is the founder of the Gay Financial Network (GFN) and according to the GFN website website was the first openly gay stock trader on the NYSE.

As first reported in a previous post on joetresh.com that includes photos from the NGLCC’s annual awards dinner, this will be the first time a gay organization has rung the stock exchange bell, according to Justin Nelson, co-founder of the NGLCC.

Disobedient Maybe, but Damn Adorable

The 12th Annual “Pride of Pets” fun dog show was held by PETS DC on the west side of Dupont Circle this afternoon, June 18, 2005. PETS DC, a “non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with HIV/AIDS and their companion animals” that hosted the event, was kind enough to ask me to be the official photographer. Enjoy the puppy pics!

What happens when you try to get all of the “Least Obedient” dogs on the stage at one time? You guessed it: puppy pandemonium.

This bright-eyed husky won “Most Glamorous Large Dog.”

Glamorous!

No, it’s not “Take your dog to work day.” This business-casual canine won “Most Original Costume.”

‘Downing Street Memo’ Letter Draws 550,000 Signatures, White House Protest

Several members of the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Representative John Conyers, deliver a letter with over 550,000 signatures to the White House demanding answers to questions surrounding a memo from British intelligence that in 2002 said, “Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.”

The letter asks five questions:

1) Do you or anyone in your administration dispute the accuracy of the leaked document?
2) Were arrangements being made, including the recruitment of allies, before you sought Congressional authorization to go to war? Did you or anyone in your Administration obtain Britain’s commitment to invade prior to this time?
3) Was there an effort to create an ultimatum about weapons inspectors in order to help with the justification for the war as the minutes indicate?
4) At what point in time did you and Prime Minister Blair first agree it was necessary to invade Iraq?
5) Was there a coordinated effort with the U.S. intelligence community and/or British officials to “fix” the intelligence and facts around the policy as the leaked document states?

Cindy Sheehan, mother of humvee mechanic Army Specialist Casey Sheehan who was killed in Iraq, speaks to the hundreds of people who attended a rally at the White House demanding a response to the letter and an end to the war.

Several speakers declared “This is the beginning of the end” saying today to be a “tipping point,” citing more press coverage and an “Out of Iraq” congressional caucus which formed in the US house today.

Capital Pride 2005

Washington DC’s 30th annual gay pride parade was held Saturday evening, June 11 2005.

The parade offered few surprises. A “PFLAG Dad” shows his support for his daughter, while members from clubs affiliated with Brother Help Thyself donned leather and hardhats to show their pride.

Mark Jaros from Fort Lauderdale and Van Neel of Arlington wathched the parade as it turned onto 17th Street, a popular corner for parade viewing and the heart of DC gay nightlife.

What would gay pride day be without buff half-naked dudes tossing their beads to the adoring crowd?

Saturday night, Richard Morel, top left and above, hosted Blowoff at the Back Bar at the 9:30 club. The occasional party has drawn a cult following of Bears.

Sunday’s Festival brough hot weather, but not so much that it kept too many people away, as scorching heat has done in years past. Above, Alex from South Carolina cools off by dousing himself at a drinking fountain.

A flagger dances in the afternoon sun at a pride festival side stage area.

Kelly Meadows, far left, and her girlfriend Teresa Glaze, both of southern Maryland, dance as Davi Anson-Dross from the “100% all girl kickass” rock group Outskirts performs. The cover band kicked off their summer tour by performing a solid and entertaining set of classic rock and blues to an engrossed crowd.
