Marc Broussard Goes "Home"

Marc Broussard - pictured above in this snapshot from his April 2, 2005, appearance at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC - is a soulful bluesman from Carencro, LA with an amazing voice. He has just released a new video for his song “Home” - easily my favorite song from his CD, “Carencro.” I love the video, too.

Watch the video for “Home.”

See him live. He’ll be in Baltimore on August 6, 2005, at the Ram’s Head.

Finding Nemo, and Harry Potter

Today I visited the National Aquarium in Baltimore. While taking this picture I could hear young children exclaiming with excitement, “Look, it’s Nemo!” Child after child found Nemo. During the break in the excitement after the children moved on, one young man who looked like Harry Potter (though I did not see a lightning-bolt scar) wandered up and calmly said, “I’ve already seen the common clown fish.”

I laughed out loud. It was as if life had offered a comedy sketch with me alone me in the audience.

The most striking thing I saw was a time-lapse illuminated map showing the depletion of the rain forests coinciding with the increase in human population. The rate at which we are consuming these vital resources is staggering. Cures for human illness are found in these forests, so why are we just destroying them? It doesn’t seem to make any sense.

From amazonrainforest.org

In addition to serving as the “Heart and Lungs” of the planet, the Amazon Rainforest constitutes the world’s largest “pharmacy” yielding thousands of previously unknown substances found no where else. Compounds from tropical flora relieve headaches, help treat glaucoma and provide muscle relaxants used during surgery. The Amazon Rainforest has also yielded guanine for the treatment of malaria and periwinkle for the treatment of leukemia. Given the rainforest’s teeming biological diversity, its value to humanity as a laboratory of natural phenomena and as a medical storehouse is priceless. Conversely, if the rainforest disappears, researchers fear that plants with wonder-drug potential will be lost forever.
