I was a big fan of Men At Work in the 80s. When I was fourteen or fifteen, I had a great ticket to a concert, but then it was cancelled. The band split up, but I continued to listen and enjoy the solo albums of Colin Hay, the group’s lead singer.
He brought his band and his wife, Cecilia Noel, to the Birchmere Theatre in Alexandria, VA, tonight. Colin sang some excellent solo tunes and told some funny stories like his meeting with Jack Nicholson which inspired the 1987 single, “Looking for Jack.” Colin also performed a beautiful version of “Waiting for my Real Life to Begin.”

Cecilia danced and sang, acting as cheerleader and interpretive dancer for the audience. I was disappointed that the two didn’t perform “Misty Bay,” a duet from Cecilia’s album Bongoloand, which I found on iTunes.

Opening for Colin was Brett Dennen, pictured above and right, a tender-voiced singer with a nice sound. This is the first time I’ve heard his music, and I enjoyed it. I’m going to give him more of a listen.
