Nineteen photos from the Washington Renegades vs. Quantico, Saturday, October 22. 2005, including a Renegades team photo. View the photos.
Quantico has been regularly routing their opposing rugby squads this fall. The Renegades, however, had no plans to fade quietly into the mist that covered the pitch on this damp autumn afternoon. The home squad vigorously defended their turf against the marines and prevented a number of tries (scores). Still, the local “multicultural” (read: “gay and gay friendly”) rugby club was unable to score let alone achieve the upset they wanted, and lost with a final score of just 27-0.
The score is being held as something of an achievement. Even the marine Camp Lejeune Misfits Rugby Club on August 27 was destroyed by Quantico, 66-0. Renegade rugger and DC blogger Jimbo posts:
On Saturday we played the team from a nearby Marine base, and while we did not win we got the least amount of points against us than any team in our league who have played them this fall.
One Renegade player was injured and taken to the hospital, but was released in time for beer at the after-match social held at Titan bar. Further tests are required, but the the doctor believes the player has a minor fracture in his wrist, according to the injured rugger.

The home team meets the marines on the pitch, and it’s a muddy day…

Adam Taylor, winner of the Founder’s Award, is a co-founder of Student Global AIDS Campaign and the former executive director of Global Justice.

Ben Wikler, co-founder of Student Global AIDS Campaign and producer of Al Franken’s radio show, won the “Student Activist Award.”

Actor and Global Justice supporter Rupert Everett won the “Adam Taylor Award,” named for the winner of the Founder’s Award, Adam Taylor.
Also winning the “Student Activist Award,” but not in attendance, was Michael Bernstein, of the Student Campaign for Child Survival.
Special: Be sure to watch the video at Amazon.com (Click here and scroll down) and watch for Ben Wikler help Al Franken deal with a bad review from a right wing dittohead. This is hilarious. Franken is a very funny physical comedian, as I discovered watching DVDs of “Lateline.” Wikler adds just the right punch.

A mural that was located on O Street near 7th Street NW, “99 Bottles of Beer on a Fuckin Wall,” by Borf, the infamous graffiti artist from the Washington DC summer of 2005, has been “buffed,” or painted over.
On top of that, in the early hours of this morning, Saturday, October 15, 2005, the site of the mural was defaced with new unsightly graffiti tags. The graffiti is displayed on the side of a disgraceful convenience market, adding to the collective eyesore of that corner.
