Memorial Day in DC: Motorcycles and Monuments

A beautiful blue sky with puffy clouds casts a dramatic shadow on the Washington Monument, Saturday, May 24, 2008, the first day of the Memorial Day weekend.

Rolling Thunder is almost here. The rumbling of Harleys can be heard throughout the city as Rolling Thunder XXI is ready to go Sunday. Here a line of motorcycles is parked off 14th St on the National Mall.

A bamboo cage with a sign reading “Reserved for Hanoi Jane” is mounted on the rear of a motorcycle in town for Rolling Thunder.

Columns at the World War II Memorial, like the one above dedicated to the District of Columbia, were decorated for the Memorial Day weekend.

A girl reads the inscription at the World War II Memorial, with a wreath and the the Lincoln Memorial in the background.
