“Anonymous” Protests Scientology at the Lincoln Memorial

Members of “Anonymous” display signs protesting the Church of Scientology to visitors walking past the Lincoln Memorial, Saturday, July 19, 2008. The group held an international “>9000 Anon March” (over nine-thousand, anonymous march) to highlight alleged abuses by the faith, developed by author L. Ron Hubbard in the early 1950s.
This is from a continuing series of photos from the >9000 Anon March that will be published on Washington Photo Journal. More to come.

It may sound like a joke, but that sign is based on real and unsettling events — first, when Vicky Boyce, head of the Plymouth, UK branch of Scientology, stole protest signs from a disabled man in a mobility scooter, and again during the July 12 coordinated protest in Battle Creek, MI, where a pair of protesters had their signs stolen and ripped in half. Video of both of these events can be found on YouTube, or linked to from the appropriate thread in the Fair Game section of the Enturbulation.org forums.
