Fallen Police Officers Honored at 20th Annual Candlelight Vigil

This is “Police Week” in Washington, D.C. The 20th annual candlelight vigil was held at the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial near 4th & E St NW. Here, an old-style police cruiser passes by the scene.

(L) Survivor Merrick Teagan. Teagan’s father, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Capt. Delmar “Del” Teagan, died on April 13, 2007, in a motor vehicle accident returning from a week-long training session.

Mementos left at the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial include a gnome with cigars.

These boots presumably are those of Police Officer Kenneth Daniels of the Detroit Tactical Services Unit, who was shot while off-duty working security at a club. A rubbing of Officer Daniels’ inscription is placed in the boots. In the background, survivors are seen making a rubbing of a name inscribed on the wall.

Names of officers who are being added to the memorial wall are read, while a thin blue line of light shines overhead.

Diane Thomas of Seattle, Washington, mother of Brier, Washington, Police Officer Edwanton Allen “Eddie” Thomas, who died while assisting paramedics with a struggling patient. Thomas was 28 and had been on the force for less than a year.

A box frame with a photo of Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Steven R. Smith, who was shot in the neck while on duty and paralyzed. Smith died seven years later. On the right, his son, Blake Smith, helps to affix an OHP patch to the wall next to another officer’s name.

Fiesta Asia, the annual Asian American Heritage Festival sponsored by Asia Heritage Foundation and Asian Fortune newspaper, was held Saturday, May 13, 2007, on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, in Washington, D.C. The festival included Asian cultural and dance acts, martial arts demonstrations, community organizations, and a parade including dragon and unicorn dance troupes.

Rain All Day

Washington D.C. needed the rain and boy, did we get it. A flood warning is in effect tonight, Saturday, October 8, 2005, until midnight in D.C. and surrounding areas. According to the National Weather Service, more than seven inches of rain have fallen since Friday afternoon. Above, pedestrians brave the continuous rainfall Saturday while walking along the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building sidewalk in downtown D.C.
