The Female Union Band Cemetery

The Mt. Zion Cemetery in Washington, DC, is composed of two burial grounds, the Female Union Band Cemetery, shown above in disrepair in this July 19, 2008, photo, and the Old Methodist Burying Ground, which is well maintained. The Female Union Band Society was a cooperative benevolent society of free black women whose members were pledged to assist one another in sickness and in death. The gravestones indicate both men and women were buried here, with most of the burials occurring between the 1880’s and 1920’s. Photo and caption by Sanjay Suchak for the Washington Photo Journal.
