Every Sunday from mid afternoon until late in the evening at Meridian Hill Park in Washington DC, a large group of dancers, drummers, and the occasional tightrope walker or hula hooper gather to participate in what can best be described as a human circus. According to the most common version of the origin of the circle, it can be said that it started as a way to celebrate the life of Malcom X after his death in 1965.

The narrative is sung from the point of view of a greasy window washer looking into a corporate boardroom from his perch on the outside. He doesn’t care for his job, and his mind wanders, asking the listener to support him in his inevitable failures. “I wish I could fly from this building, from this wall,” Ed Robertson, center, sings. “And if I should try, would you catch me if I fall, when I fall?” Steven Page sings backup and Jim Creeggan plays upright bass. The rest of the band joins in finishing the gentle song, ending the concert.

Barenaked Ladies held a “Double Dipper” set Sunday, January 27, 2008, during Ships and Dip III for fans who were on the cruise for the second time (S&D III was actually the second cruise, not the third). During the set, BNL performed their songs picked randomly from a bucket of requests provided by fans, some of which they hadn’t sung for years. Above, Steven Page and Ed Robertson get some help from a lyric book, provided by one of the fans. They played everything that was pulled (“F@%k it, it’s in the bucket!”), with the exception of “One Week.” Page said something to the effect of “I don’t come on the cruise to play ‘One Week.’” Fans agreed.
