My inaugural week started off with the unveiling and installation of the Obama portrait by Shepard Fairey in the National Portrait Gallery on Saturday, Januray 17, 2009. The gallery obtained the portrait because of its ubiquitous presence during the presidential campaign. It has become an icon for our time.

Fairey said when he got the idea for the image, he went to the internet and found a base image to start with. Bloggers have been wondering who took the original photo until recently when Mannie Garcia, a former AP freelancer, was identified. the original photo was taken during a press conference “
when Obama appeared at the National Press Club with the actor George Clooney to discuss the genocide in Darfur.”
